Kwun Tong Swimming Pool Complex and Recreation Ground

Hong Kong, China

This new three-storey swimming pool complex provides an Olympic standard suite of swimming pools and a comprehensive range of additional leisure facilities. Created through intelligent site design, the complex meets Kwun Tong District’s need for a modern public swimming pool complex with greater capacity.

The main complex is formed from two interlocking volumes, gently distorted in both plan and elevation to reduce their visual mass. The elevations are largely glazed, with terracotta panels and fair-faced concrete finishes, while the angled roof planes “float” above the pool buildings. Horizontal louvres minimize solar gain and glare at the pool level, while enhancing the lateral appearance of the building mass. Its sustainable, brilliant design won the Merit Recognition in the 2014 Design for Asia Awards and Excellence in 2013 Perspective Awards. The complex is certified with Platinum rating in the Hong Kong BEAM environmental assessment.
