Northern Metropolis Cultural Centre

Hong Kong, China

The Northern Metropolis Cultural Centre comprises a large 1,400-seat auditorium, a medium-sized 700-seat theatre, a multi-purpose studio, children’s theatre, experimental “incubator spaces”, and rehearsal rooms. It is designed to provide a multi-purpose professional performance venue for different art forms as well as to accommodate the first children’s theatre in Hong Kong with a mission to spark children’s interest in the performing arts from a young age.

The design concept was inspired by the idea of a traditional New Territories walled village. The building’s façade is mainly decorated with blue brick tiles, while a glass wall lets in natural light and maximises views. Bronze metal window shades also help absorb and redirect excessive heat.

The Northern Metropolis Cultural Centre will be one of the most significant landmarks in the Hong Kong government’s Northern Metropolis plan. It will help cement Hong Kong’s role as a “cultural exchange centre between China and the West” by fostering the confluence of local artistic talent with those from the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and by staging quality performances all year round. The incubator spaces will also provide ample time, space and technical equipment for artists to experiment with different performance styles and art forms and serve as interactive platforms where artists can connect the arts sectors of Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas.
